Clay found Ellie staring at a monitor inside a small cubicle in the library. For a moment, all he did was stand there as she compared a photo on the screen with several of Neil Burton’s files.

While he knew she would rather be outside, chasing down Katarina and Kingsley, he marveled at her intensity and focus. As she studied a picture, she wrapped a strand of her red hair around her finger. In her blue jeans and red top, she looked so young, like she could be a college student. He not only found her attractive from all angles, his heart was starting to be in it now.

“I know you’re back there, jealous of my expansive office, no doubt.” She turned the chair to face him, but her expression didn’t offer a warm greeting. “What do you want?”

He stepped forward, leaning against the cubicle wall. “I wanted you to know that I’m leaving for a bit.”

“Where to?”

“CPD. I want to check on your Audi.”

She snorted. “What’s left of it.” There was a quality about Ellie that was so genuine, he never had to wonder about some ulterior motive. But there was something in her eyes that spoke of pain, a cut so deep that he didn’t know if anyone could reach it.

“You okay?” He had sudden second thoughts about letting her go through Burton’s files alone. Would they be too much of a flashback to what she’d experienced herself?

“I’m fine.”

He sized her up, but her green gaze was now telling him that she knew what he was thinking, and he’d do better to not open his mouth if he didn’t want a fight. He thought it odd that she hadn’t already asked to come with him. Though he didn’t really want her to face the burned-out skeleton of her vehicle, he asked, “Want to join me?”

She stared up at him, then glanced at the computer screen and at the pile of papers on the table. “I’m in Fortis quarantine, and it wouldn’t do to have him spot me, so I’ll pass. I liked my Audi, and if I see it now, I might not be able to continue to live under these circumstances.”

He nodded, knowing it took steel for her to hang back from her own car-bombing investigation. “I’m also going to review some of the video taken from around your building. With any luck, I might come up with a suspect.”

“We need some luck. I’ll be here when you get back.”

Clay wanted to lean over and kiss her, just a tap of the lips. But they were in the ACTeam building, after all, and there were cameras everywhere. He didn’t want footage of him and her in a lip-lock. They’d gone through that already with the photos.

“I’m going to the gun range later. You can join me if you’re back in time.”

Clay was a regular at the indoor range, and he was glad Ellie was putting in some time there. “I’ll let you know my ETA.”

With a wave, Clay headed for the door.
